How did Endress+Hauser perform in the past year?

Holding steady

Endress+Hauser increased its sales only marginally in 2024, after three years of double-digit growth. But while the hoped-for economic upturn in the second half of the year failed to materialize, we still managed to hold steady. We were aided in this by our diversified market position with its extensive range of products, solutions and services and its broad mix of regions, industries and customer segments.

Although achieving only muted growth, we were able to keep our profits on par with the high levels achieved in the previous year. At the same time, we invested heavily in growing our global production and sales networks. We are cautiously optimistic for 2025 – in part because of our strategic partnership with the German sensor technology specialist SICK, which we initiated last year. The partnership enables us to offer a broader range of products and services and enhances our expertise in gas analysis and flow measurement technology.

How did Endress+Hauser perform in the past year?

Strong growth

Sales for the Endress+Hauser Group once again showed a strong increase in 2023, underpinned in part by a record volume of orders in hand. This was despite foreign exchange effects costing us nearly four percent in growth. Momentum slowed in the second half of the year, but we were still able to maintain incoming orders at a solid level and close out the year once more with a high backlog of orders.

As a family company, Endress+Hauser has access to extensive strategic financial resources. Depending on how the capital markets developed, these resources have repeatedly had a strong impact on our result in the past. For this reason we will focus our future balance sheet reporting on the operative business. This leads to a significantly lower equity ratio. But as in the past, we are not dependent on external creditors and have reduced bank loans to nearly zero.

Investment in the next generation

In Demographic change in many countries around the world is causing problems for companies seeking young recruits. Among other things, it’s increasingly difficult to fill apprenticeships. Despite these challenges, 100 young people began an apprenticeship or dual study program at Endress+Hauser locations in Germany, Switzerland and France in 2023 – the same number as the previous year. There will be even more in future: Endress+Hauser aims to set aside five percent of all positions for apprentices, students and interns by the year 2027.

To attain this ambitious goal, the Group has created a new department focused on global dual education. All these activities are now coordinated centrally with the product and sales center networks. “Our goal is to roll out dual education structures globally across the company and develop them further. We deploy standards, training content and programs to streamline introduction of the models and ensure quality. We also want to intensify collaboration with universities and colleges. It should all help us attract new employees,” explains Jens Kröger, head of the department.

Exporting a successful model

Activities concentrate on product and sales centers that to date have been less involved in dual education programs – schemes that combine theoretical instruction at vocational colleges or universities with practical on-the-job stints in the company. Endress+Hauser in collaboration with the German Foreign Chamber of Commerce has offered such a program for up-and-coming mechatronics technicians in Aurangabad, India, since 2018 and in Greenwood, USA, since 2019. In Greenwood, Endress+Hauser is cooperating with Kettering University, a STEM college whose students receive hands-on experience at the company. “We want to launch the dual education program in China as a next step,” says Jens Kröger.

Never too early

To get more children and teenagers interested in technical professions, Endress+Hauser operates school research centers. The most recent of these labs opened in Maulburg in southern Germany, where it is attached to the product center for level and pressure measurement. Pupils from the surrounding area can have fun developing interests in robotics, 3D printing and electronics technologies. Activities include computer game programming, building a personal weather station or an amplifier. The focus is always on practical applications, with equipment and materials provided to course participants.

Reaching for the stars

Students at technical universities around the world enter their Mars Rover prototypes in one of Europe’s biggest competitions in the fields of robotics and aerospace, the annual European Rover Challenge in Poland. The students’ remote-controlled vehicles must prove their mettle at navigating a geologically accurate simulation of Martian terrain. The team from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland finished the 2023 challenge in second place – with help from four Endress+Hauser employees. They shared technical knowledge and led the group of 22 students majoring in varied disciplines, from computer science and mechanical engineering to electronics and information technology.

On track for growth

Endress+Hauser continues to grow – and that includes the company’s sales and production networks. The Group has invested more than 1.1 billion euros in buildings, plants and IT infrastructure over the past five years. Projects worth over 570 million euros are currently underway in 13 countries around the world. For instance, by the year 2030 there will have been 118 million euros invested in developing the product center for level and pressure in Maulburg, Germany. There is a new sales building under construction in Greenwood, Indiana, at a cost of 37 million euros, as well as development of the headquarters campus at Endress+Hauser subsidiary Analytik Jena to the tune of 50 million euros.

3 questions for Tschekav Münch

Your position is new at Endress+Hauser. How did this come about?

Endress+Hauser continues to grow, which means that in coming years the Group will be building or renovating production and sales centers around the world. I work at corporate level with teams on the ground to make sure these construction projects are not only completed successfully and efficiently, but also create long-term added value – for the company, its employees and customers.

What does it take to achieve this?

Construction projects keep growing in complexity, with increasing requirements from all stakeholders. So it matters more than ever to have structured and uniform processes, along with clear internal guidelines. The buildings must also be future-proof, for example in terms of climate protection or being suited to a productive and collaboration-oriented work environment. This calls for the right quality and the right design.

What are the architectural hallmarks of new Endress+Hauser buildings?

We aim for a harmonious blend of simplicity, functionality and sustainability. That means clean lines, intelligent use of space and resources, and integration of renewable energies. With innovative solutions around sustainability in particular, we want to keep on minimizing our environmental impact and stay ahead of current requirements. This will make us a pioneer in sustainable industrial architecture.

Excellence in innovation

Endress+Hauser is among the most innovative companies in Switzerland. In a recent survey conducted by two Swiss business magazines in collaboration with market research and data analysis specialist Statista, Endress+Hauser placed fifth in the overall rankings and second in the category for electronics and industrial technology. The survey analyzed a total of 185 companies in terms of their general innovativeness, innovative products and innovation culture. 8,900 employees and experts in the field were questioned.

personnel managers, HR business partners and Endress+Hauser managers recently underwent ‘unconscious bias’ training. It’s a kind of bias we all have without knowing it, which can hinder companies in their drive for diversity. Unconscious bias may lead hiring managers to instinctively select job applicants who closely match their own personalities, or stereotype applicants based on a particular trait or characteristic. “We reflected on our mindsets and scrutinized our behavior patterns,” says Sandra Rubart, corporate director for brand management & communication.

Climate-conscious commuting

Plenty of people drive to work each day, frequently over long distances and alone in their cars. Not only does that overcrowd the roads, it also harms the climate: the average gasoline combustion engine emits 120 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer. Several Endress+Hauser locations in Switzerland and Germany now use software to connect employees who have similar commutes. Forming car pools becomes quick and easy, the CO2 footprint shrinks significantly, and there is the added benefit of getting to know new colleagues.

Staying in business entails embracing change. So how is Endress+Hauser working to keep its innovative edge through the decades to come? An interview with Dirk Neirinck, Corporate Director of Business Development.

INNOVATION

Mr Neirinck, what do you think is the secret to corporate longevity?

I can illustrate that based on the example of Endress+Hauser: the company began in 1953 as a pioneer in the field of electronic sensors. Today, it is the world’s leading provider of process and laboratory measurement technology, automation solutions and services. Over the course of seven decades, appealing products have kept Endress+Hauser as a constant on the market. Accompanying this, the company translated its innovations into profit that was reinvested in research and development. So the secret to longevity lies in the ability to keep on innovating and to capitalize on new ideas in order to continue offering value to customers.

Endress+Hauser’s customers come from the process industry, a sector with a rather long-term mindset.

Indeed. The process industry has product cycles sometimes lasting 20 to 30 years and demands the utmost in safety and reliability. Our customers count on us to maintain their installed base and continue adapting the existing portfolio to a changing environment. Some good examples are the energy transition and digitalization. At the same time, we must keep our eyes open to breakthrough developments.

Who’s in charge of that at the company?

Our culture of innovation has two main focus areas: on the one hand, some 1,200 R&D employees at the product centers look at ways to improve and advance our existing portfolio. The inspiration for these incremental innovations, as they’re known, often comes straight from customers who tell us their pain points and sometimes join forces with us in codevelopment agreements. At the same time, we want to explore the unknown for ourselves by using technology radars and agile development methods. Such experimental innovation hinges on having freedom outside our core business.

Dirk Neirinck (59) has been Corporate Director of Business Development since 2016. An electronics engineer specializing in chip design, he started his career at Endress+Hauser in 2001 as Managing Director for Belgium and Luxembourg. In 2012, he transferred to the company’s headquarters in Switzerland to lead the Group-wide sales support team.

What approaches are you pursuing here?

One example is the University of Freiburg, where there is an on-campus innovation center at the engineering faculty known as FRIZ for short. Here we have brought together various small business units with experts on sensors, optics, biosystems, microsystems and the Industrial Internet of Things, all performing their respective research in close proximity. They inspire each other with innovative ideas and collaborate on sensor solutions for the future, such as sensors that mimic human senses. Our center of competence for level and pressure measurement has an innovation lab that deploys agile methods in its work on novel product concepts. Then there are predevelopment teams, likewise based near universities, that investigate how new technologies can become products.

Are development clusters like those unique at the company?

They play a special role indeed. It can be hard to understand what the signs on the doors at the FRIZ mean (laughs). What matters is the correct ratio of incremental to experimental innovation. Too much freedom means we’ll never arrive at marketable applications. But sticking too closely with the tried and true might cause us to miss potential game changers. We’re creating a healthy balance through open innovation.

What does open innovation mean, exactly?

Open innovation means focused receptiveness to people and organizations outside the company in the collaborative search for innovations. Alliances with customers and partner companies are part of that, alongside joint development projects with universities and research institutes, as well as start-up scouting, acquisitions and joint ventures. As an example, targeted acquisitions were how Endress+Hauser tapped into the business area of laboratory analysis and amassed new expertise in Raman spectroscopy and laser-based gas analysis. The same approach is also behind our expanded know-how in sensors and biosensors.

Is open innovation on the up?

Yes, because our world is constantly accelerating. We have more basic and applied research than ever before, just as we have more technologies. For a company facing such complexity, the only workable response is to open itself up. Going it alone no longer works in this world. When you share your ideas, you get more ideas back in the end.

The Swiss business magazine Bilanz ranked Endress+Hauser seventh in its 2022 list of Switzerland’s most innovative companies, just behind major customers such as Roche, Novartis, Lonza and Nestlé. An R&D ratio exceeding 7 percent, 8,700 patents and patent applications, and over 1,200 people working in research and development bear witness to a firmly enshrined culture of innovation. At its annual Innovators’ Meeting, Endress+Hauser acknowledges the creativity and dedication of its in-house inventors.

How did Endress+Hauser perform in the past year?

Extraordinary growth

For Endress+Hauser, 2022 was characterized by strong growth worldwide. A quarter of the sales companies generated a revenue increase of more than 30 percent. Even considering exchange rate effects and price increases, this performance is extraordinary. And more remarkable still is that we expect double-digit growth in 2023 as well, underpinned by a record volume of orders in hand and consistently good volumes of incoming orders. Although we also improved our operating profit in 2022, income came in below the previous year’s figures. Losses from our financial investments, foreign exchange losses and higher currency hedging costs negatively impacted our income statement. Russia’s war on Ukraine is also casting a shadow on our review. Because of the sanctions, we are withdrawing from the Russian market – 170 of our people are losing their jobs.

Endress+Hauser looks back on seven eventful decades

It was an unlikely pair that came together in 1953 to create a company: on one side, the Swiss engineer Georg H Endress, just 29, and on the other, the German Ludwig Hauser, 58, head of a cooperative bank. But the two complemented each other perfectly. The vision and drive of one was as important for success as the prudence and experience of the other.

From the back room into the world

L Hauser KG opened for business on 1 February. The young company was headquartered in Hauser's apartment in Lörrach in Germany, financed with modest start-up capital of 2,000 deutsche marks. The company was named after Ludwig Hauser’s wife, Luise, who is listed in the commercial register as the shareholder.

The young company started with the sale of innovative electronic level sensors that filled a market niche. It wasn’t long before Endress began to develop instruments on his own. In 1955 he registered his first patent with what is now known as the Swiss Federal Institute for Intellectual Property. Production took place in rented spaces, with the employees distributed throughout several buildings that they teasingly, but affectionately, referred to as the ‘United Hut Works’.

Opening new markets step by step

In 1957 the company began trading under the name Endress+Hauser – and experienced strong growth. The company continued to carve out new niches. Georg H Endress compared his approach to ‘rolling out the dough’. He continuously expanded the portfolio by adding new measurement principles and pursued business opportunities in other countries. The first foreign subsidiary was created in 1960 in the Netherlands. Other sales centers followed virtually every year.

The company expanded its offerings through acquisitions and start-ups. Measurement value recording, liquid analysis and flow measurement engineering were added as new fields of activity to the mix, followed later by pressure and temperature measurement technologies. Endress+Hauser evolved into a full-range provider for the process industries. By this time, the Hauser era was already history. The Endress family became the sole shareholder in 1975.

Global structures, universal culture

Klaus Endress took over the reins of the Group from his father in 1995. Over the following years he expanded the business beyond process instrumentation into services and automation solutions. He also tackled the challenges of doing business in a globalized world. After establishing sales centers around the world, production also went global; modern IT ensured interconnection.

For 19 years Klaus Endress put his personal stamp not only on the Group but also on the corporate culture. He recognized loyalty and responsibility as core values in the relationships between customers, employees and shareholders. Not least, the future of the family business was close to his heart. He drove forward work on a family charter in which the shareholder family stated that Endress+Hauser should remain a successful familyowned company. With the death of Georg H. Endress in 2008, this sentence became his legacy.

Focus on digitalization and analysis

In 2014, Matthias Altendorf took over as CEO. He is not a member of the Endress family but has been working at the company for over 25 years. Laboratory analysis specialist Analytik Jena was already part of the Group at this point. Further acquisitions strengthened process analysis and the measurement of quality parameters. In addition, Matthias Altendorf was pushing the topic of digitalization in products, in customer interaction and in business processes.

During the coronavirus pandemic, the extensive digitalization proved its worth. Endress+Hauser could support customers remotely and was coping well with the crisis. But the challenges are not abating. The Russian attack on Ukraine resulted in harsh sanctions; Endress+Hauser had to stop work in Russia. In addition, the conflict clouded the economic outlook.

With confidence into the anniversary year

Nevertheless, Endress+Hauser is entering its anniversary year with confidence. The Group supports customers in major challenges such as digitalization and decarbonization. Endress+Hauser contributes to the supply, nutrition and health of people. The company is on sound footing; its global footprint ensures stability. And the shareholder family has everything in place to ensure a smooth handover of responsibility to the third generation.

Endress+Hauser Canada involved employees in the planning of its new Customer Experience Center in Burlington, Ontario. The result is a wealth of good ideas for one of the greenest buildings in the country, which generates more renewable energy than it consumes – and more than compensates for the small indulgence of a traditional barbecue.

Snow-covered pine forests and sweeping winter landscapes. When talk turns to Canada, many people think of the cold season. But in truth, this is a land of extremes. Winter temperatures in the densely populated regions of southern Canada on the Great Lakes can drop to minus 30 degrees Celsius or lower. But in summer, these same areas experience a humid climate, with occasional hot spells when temperatures may rise as high as 35 degrees Celsius.

That’s why many buildings in Canada need both heating and cooling. While electric air-conditioning systems keep things cool, heat still comes primarily from fossil-based natural gas. All the same, hydroelectric power is traditionally a major component of Canada’s energy mix: the second largest country on earth in terms of land area already sources two-thirds of its electricity needs from renewables.

THREE CERTIFICATIONS AT ONCE

In late 2018, sustainable energy was a hot topic at Endress+Hauser’s Canadian sales center. “A desire to invest in green technologies quickly became clear from discussions with employees and management about our new Customer Experience Center in Burlington,” says Anthony Varga, Managing Director of Endress+Hauser Canada. “The result was that we became a pioneer in Canada.” That’s because Endress+Hauser is the first private company to strive for all three certifications bestowed by the Canada Green Building Council: Net Zero Energy, Zero Carbon Building Standards, and gold-level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

After the go-ahead, Project Manager Eliza Vrbanac and her team developed a total operating concept for the office building, which also serves as a Customer Experience Center. The ground floor houses a process training unit (PTU) that includes a pilot system where customers can test Endress+Hauser applications under wide-ranging process conditions, a calibration lab, a repair shop and a training center. The floor above provides flexible workspaces for up to 120 employees. “We also installed south-facing windows in order to let abundant sunlight into the building,” says Eliza Vrbanac. “And as a further example, the atrium has a four-meter-high fig tree that improves air quality in its own natural way.”

775 SOLAR PANELS AND 24 DEEP BOREHOLES

At the heart of the concept are two components: a solar energy system on the roof and a geothermal heat pump system that it powers. The 775 solar panels can produce a theoretical 408,000 kilowatthours per year. “Compare that number to our average annual consumption of roughly 350,000 kilowatt-hours. Generating capacity exceeds inhouse demand, which means we can even feed power back into the grid,” the project manager calculates.

The geothermal system draws heat from 24 boreholes under the employee parking lot that go down to a depth of 180 meters. “We laid nearly 9 kilometers of pipes for the geothermal system,” explains Eliza Vrbanac. “180 meters down, the year-round temperature at our location is a constant 12 degrees Celsius. This gets absorbed by a glycol-water mix that circulates through the underground geothermal loops and back into the building, where it feeds the heat pumps and only has to be warmed by about 10 degrees.” Best of all, the 130 heat pumps send warm air at 20 degrees directly into various areas of the building. So they act as an all-in-one heating and air-conditioning system, depending on outdoor temperature.

“All of the features were based on an employee survey,” emphasizes Anthony Varga. “We were able to fulfill a considerable number of wishes, from an exercise room, shower and changing rooms, to a multifaith prayer room.” The most important leisure amenity, though, is the gas grill on the roof patio. “Barbecuing is a big thing in Canada,” explains the managing director, tongue in cheek. “So we are still connected to natural gas – although it only gets used for firing up the grill.”

Robust surge in growth

Endress+Hauser returned to the growth path in 2021. Business got off to an excellent start, continuously picking up speed as the year progressed. The result was an increase in net sales of nearly 12 percent, with orders on hand growing even more strongly. We thus not only improved over the prior year, but significantly exceeded the comparative figures for 2019. We did not anticipate such a dynamic development. All of our strategic industries, led by life sciences, chemical and food & beverage, contributed to the strong growth. Given that profit and headcount are also higher than ever before, we can proudly look back on a ‘best ever’ year for Endress+Hauser!

Vote of confidence

Which companies enjoy the highest levels of trust? To find the answer, German business magazine Focus-Money launched a study that evaluated 21,000 companies and brands across more than 200 industries. In the measurement technology category, Endress+Hauser topped the list. Although the study result is a snapshot of feeling, it does raise the question of what this trust is based on, especially now after two years of the coronavirus pandemic.

Endress+Hauser could always deliver during the pandemic. Supply and logistics chains held up despite being under strain. Considerable effort went into safeguarding the availability of materials for production; long-term supplier relationships also helped here. In the area of transportation logistics, specialists managed to secure the required capacity despite frequent interruptions to the chain. “We fought for every shipment,” reports Oliver Blum, Corporate Director of Supply Chain. The on-time delivery rate exceeded 90 percent, an excellent figure even in normal times.

Endress+Hauser was always available during the pandemic. A key factor here was digitalization: salespeople were able to consult with customers while working from home and service technicians provided remote support. The endress.com website has long offered not just information but a wide range of services. Customers value closely interlocking physical and virtual worlds. Digital business may still represent a small share of overall global activities, but the online sales channel is up and coming, emphasizes Nikolaus Krüger, Chief Sales Officer: “In Brazil, a fifth of sales volume is online, and six out of every seven customers are digitally active.”

Endress+Hauser was always reliable during the pandemic, including for its employees. From the outset, the Group announced that it would do everything possible to retain people and avoid short-time working. Sales and production were ready for when business picked up again, and the workforce demonstrated its full commitment. “Trust in the Endress+Hauser brand rests on the people in the company,” stresses CEO Matthias Altendorf. “They live up to our values and deliver on our brand promises.”

Next generation

The next generation of the shareholder family is in the ascendant. Sandra Genge, granddaughter of company founder Georg H Endress, is the newest member of the Endress+Hauser Supervisory Board. She succeeds Hans-Peter Endress (75), who is stepping down upon reaching the age limit. Sandra Genge, born in 1977, is a self-employed communications consultant and a mother of three. She has represented the younger generation of the shareholder family on the Family Council since 2006.

Life-saving jabs

Vaccination against the coronavirus reduces infection risk and is effective at preventing serious illness. That’s why many Endress+Hauser locations made it possible for employees, their family members and even people in nearby companies to receive a jab. One especially significant initiative took place at the production facility in Aurangabad in western India. With support from CII, an industry association, and Bajaj, a multinational conglomerate, Endress+Hauser erected a vaccination center on the Group’s campus. Employees of micro, small and mid-sized companies across the region, and not least residents of surrounding villages, came in droves to be vaccinated at no cost. More than 50,000 doses have been administered to date.

Signs of transition

The energy transition is taking clearer shape at Endress+Hauser too, producing some noteworthy results.

Green commuting

Around 250 people produce measurement technology for Endress+Hauser in Aurangabad, India. They are bused in from the surrounding area and brought back home in the evening. Two electric buses manufactured by Tata Motors recently went into operation, each nine meters long and carrying up to 34 passengers. As photovoltaic systems on the roof of the Aurangabad plant generate green energy, the electric buses are not only free of emissions while on the road but can also be charged in a climate-friendly way.

Heat on tap

More than 25,000 square meters of new buildings at the flow measurement technology plant in Reinach, Switzerland, are climate neutral. Photovoltaic systems are part of the location’s energy concept, with supplementary solar panels boosting the installed capacity to one megawatt peak. Another key to energy efficiency is a 57,000-liter heat storage vessel that accumulates operational waste heat and releases it as needed for heating the premises and producing warm water.

Blooming sustainability

A wind tree – a metal construction with miniature wind turbines – has long stood in front of the Endress+Hauser Liquid Analysis facilities in Gerlingen, Germany. Now a sunflower has also sprouted up there. The Smart Flower has photovoltaic modules on its petals, which unfurl and follow the sun’s course throughout the day. At nearly five meters in diameter, the solar flower is visible evidence of the location’s sustainable energy concept, producing power of up to 4.5 kilowatts.

Ideas in action

Have you already acted on your New Year’s resolutions? Dozens of Endress+Hauser employees are setting a good example. CEO Matthias Altendorf got the ball rolling with his support for the Endress+Hauser Water Challenge. This involves employees around the world taking part in charity runs to raise money for projects that provide access to clean water. The Group doubles each donation. Given that Covid has impeded communal endeavors, now anyone can become active on their own as long as the chosen goal is tied to a physical activity. The Group’s CEO has set his own objective of splitting 10 cubic meters of logs from his own patch of forest. Around the globe, 120 employees have signed up to participate as joggers, skiers or swimmers for this good cause. Campaign proceeds flow into new water projects in the Philippines and India.

Innovation incubator

Polluted water, tainted foodstuffs, contaminated milk: rapid molecular analyses will one day enable on-site detection of contaminants in even the tiniest amounts. Endress+Hauser and Hahn-Schickard, a German non-profit research association, have created a joint venture – Endress+Hauser BioSense – tasked with developing the methods and instruments needed for in-process and laboratory applications. Like other innovative Endress+Hauser units involved in novel sensor technologies, biosensors and solutions for Industry 4.0, the new startup is based on the campus of the University of Freiburg, Germany.

Training initiative

Well-trained specialists count among the keys to success for Endress+Hauser. Commitment to training young people is also an expression of social responsibility. With this in mind, Endress+Hauser plans to more than double the training rate over the long term, with five percent of all positions set aside for interns, apprentices, trainees and students.

electromagnetic flowmeters have been sold by Endress+Hauser since 1977. This technology can be used to measure electrically conductive media such as water, milk and beverages, in addition to slurries, acids and alkalis, in pipes with diameters ranging from a tiny 2 millimeters to a massive 3 meters.

Time for the kids

The lockdown was often a double burden for parents. Moms and dads suddenly had to work from home while simultaneously caring for the kids on their own or helping them with their schooling. Where necessary and possible, Endress+Hauser sought flexible solutions and gave parents a maximum of five days to arrange childcare on short notice.

A boost for female power

The higher you go in the company hierarchy, the more it’s a man’s world. Today, one out of every six management positions at Endress+Hauser is held by a woman – although nearly one-third of the workforce is female. At Endress+Hauser, the conference table will one day be more diverse and colorful. The goal is to increase the presence of female managers to around 30 percent by the year 2030.

Paving the way to this goal is the Women’s Integrated Network, a global initiative whose members develop local measures at locations around the world. One of the objectives is to attract more women to the company, seeking a target of 40 percent at all levels. Another goal is to encourage women to assume responsibility for personnel, projects and technical areas.

Job advertisements will be written so that they appeal to both genders. The company wants to make managers aware of unconscious bias when selecting personnel. Endress+Hauser wants to specifically target the professional development of female employees and further improve work-life balance. Finally, female role models in the company should enjoy increased visibility.

Behind all of this is the conviction that diversity makes companies more successful. As more people with different perspectives become involved in the company, the more robust, agile and innovative the organization becomes. For this reason, Endress+Hauser wants all of its employees to feel comfortable and free to flourish, regardless of gender, age, ethnic background, religious and ideological beliefs or sexual orientation.

Donating know-how

No visits, no events, no training programs. How can trustworthy relationships be built in such an environment? Companies are not the only ones facing this challenge during the pandemic. Humedica, a humanitarian assistance organization based in Kaufbeuren, Germany, was also struggling with the abrupt severance of personal contact with donors and volunteers. It’s a good thing that experts in digital learning and virtual knowledge transfer are nearby. 300,000 protective masks for entities in countries heavily impacted by Covid-19 were distributed by Endress+Hauser China at no cost when the pandemic first hit. Another 700,000 were acquired centrally with the help of colleagues in China to supply employees across 25 Group companies with masks.

International hub

Endress+Hauser is strengthening its logistics network in Europe. In Wörrstadt, Germany, near Frankfurt Airport, a new logistics center will start up in mid-2021. The hub, operated by Hellmann Worldwide Logistics, can handle eight times the volume of the current system. The new logistics hub will bundle all products belonging to an order and ship them to domestic and international customers. It will bring supplies to overseas production locations as well. The logistics center will also receive and distribute materials destined for Endress+Hauser production facilities in Europe. Shuttle trucks that deliver products will return with supplier parts, thus improving the eco-balance of the entire supply chain.

The blue world

Four more countries on the Endress+Hauser sales organization map will be shaded blue in the future. Endress+Hauser is establishing sales offices in Bulgaria, Egypt, Peru and the Philippines, all built on many years of activity by local sales representatives. And in Panama, the Group will provide the established sales support for Latin America with its own legal entity.

Leader in climate protection

In Reinach, Switzerland, Endress+Hauser produces world-class measurement technology – and combines this with outstanding climate protection. Within five years, the Reinach product center reduced its relative greenhouse emissions by 43 percent, from 1.68 to 0.95 equivalent tonnes of CO₂ per million euros in sales. In recognition of these efforts, a survey conducted by Bilanz magazine, daily newspaper Le Temps and the Statista statistics portal ranked the location as being among Switzerland’s top 20 companies. Behind this success lie continuous investments in energy efficiency, plus the fact that the plant is powered entirely from renewable sources. The ambitious goal is to reduce the site’s CO₂ emissions to zero by the year 2030.

Up and running again

Full of vim and vigor, the Endress+Hauser Water Challenge was launched in 2019. With this initiative, employees around the world collected donations through charity runs – with the company doubling the donated sums – to bring people access to clean water. Although the coronavirus crisis brought these activities to a halt, employees found a way to dodge the pandemic with the Winter Water Challenge: skiing, snowshoeing or jogging, each employee alone but all with the same goal. The proceeds from this and other campaigns are flowing into a new project in the Philippines. In the province of Cavite, a two-hour drive south of Manila, the plan is to connect 80 households to the water supply system, thus permanently improving the living conditions of 400 people.
